The City of Hayward is offering an opportunity for individuals aspiring to begin a career in law enforcement as a Police Officer Trainee. This entry-level, non-sworn position is designed for candidates who have not yet attended a California POST-certified police academy. Selected candidates will be sponsored to attend the police academy, where they will receive comprehensive training in law enforcement principles, procedures, and techniques. Upon successful completion of the academy, trainees will be eligible for promotion to the position of sworn Police Officer.

Experience: No prior law enforcement experience or POST-certified police academy training is required.

The City of Hayward is accepting application for Police Officer--Academy Graduates and Academy Participants. Police Officers at the City of Hayward perform a wide variety of law enforcement assignments including but not limited to: patrol, traffic control, criminal and juvenile investigation, and radio communication. These require operating a patrol car or motorcycle, arresting and citing violators of laws, writing reports, serving warrants, testifying in court and providing information to the public.
Minimum Qualifications
Experience: One (1) year in a law enforcement agency within the last thirty-six (36) months and possession of a current Basic California P.O.S.T Certificate.

OR Currently employed by a law enforcement agency and have successfully passed a field training officer (FTO) program, but have yet to complete probation.

OR Successful completion of a California Basic P.O.S.T approved academy certificate. Obtained within the past eighteen (18) months from date of application is desirable.
Education: High school diploma or equivalent. Possession of an Associate's degree or Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution is desirable.
Licensing: Possession and maintenance of a valid Class C California Driver's License.
Other Requirements:
  • Free of any felony convictions.
  • Legally authorized to work in the United States as outline by federal law.

Lateral officers perform a wide range of law enforcement duties including patrolling assigned areas, enforcing laws and ordinances, investigating crimes and traffic incidents, making arrests, preparing reports, and testifying in court. Officers are also expected to respond to calls for service, provide public assistance, and engage in community-oriented policing practices.

Public Safety Dispatcher (Lateral)

The Public Safety Dispatcher (Lateral) is responsible for answering emergency and non-emergency calls and dispatching police, fire, and other city services using a computer-aided dispatch (CAD) system. This role requires the ability to handle multiple tasks under pressure, communicate clearly with the public and first responders, and work various shifts including nights, weekends, and holidays.
Minimum Qualifications
Experience: Two (2) years of experience as a public safety dispatcher for a Public Safety Answering Point (PSAP), including substantial public contact while performing multiple tasks and using a computer-aided dispatch system.
Licenses and Certificates: Completion of the California Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) Basic Public Safety Dispatcher course is highly desirable.
Education: Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth (12th) grade.
Typing Requirement: A typing certificate demonstrating the ability to type at least 35 net words per minute is required. Certificates must be obtained from a public school, business school, or temporary agency; online or home computer tests are not accepted. The certificate must be dated within six (6) months prior to the application filing date and include details of a five-minute timed test, gross typing speed, number of errors, and net words per minute.

Jail Supervisor

The City of Hayward is seeking a qualified and experienced professional to join the Hayward Police Department as a Jail Supervisor. This advanced-level, civilian leadership position plays a key role in the daily operations of our Type I jail facility. Under the direction of the Jail Administrator, the Jail Supervisor oversees jail personnel, ensures compliance with legal standards, and helps maintain a safe and secure environment for staff and inmates.
Minimum Qualifications
Experience: At least two (2) years of increasingly responsible experience as a jailer in a department comparable to the Hayward Police Department.
Certification: Possession of a current Basic California POST Certificate.
Education: High school diploma or equivalent.
Licensing & Certifications:
  • Possession of a valid Class C California Driver's License.
  • Possession of a Basic Corrections Officer Academy Certificate from a certified STC academy.
  • Must possess or obtain a Correctional Officer Supervisor Course Certificate (or POST Supervisory Course) during the probationary period.
