The City of Hayward is seeking skilled individuals for the role of Communications Operator (Dispatcher). This recruitment may also be used to fill Call Taker vacancies. Play a crucial role in public safety and join our team in providing essential services to our community.
Role & Responsibilities
As a Communications Operator with the Hayward Police Department, you will operate a computer-aided dispatch system, receiving and dispatching calls for police, fire, or other City services. This is a journey-level technical position where you’ll perform a full range of duties independently.
Emergency Response: Receive and manage emergency and non-emergency calls from the public, private companies, and other jurisdictions.
Dispatch Duties: Coordinate the dispatch of police, fire, or other City services as needed.
Communication Relay: Transmit essential information to public safety personnel and other agencies.
Monitor Activity: Keep accurate records of the location and status of public safety units and monitor multiple communication frequencies.
Disaster Response: Assist in relaying information during natural disasters and critical incidents.
Located within the Support Services Division, our center is a vital link for public safety in Hayward. With six dedicated stations, each operator plays a pivotal role in gathering crucial information to ensure positive outcomes in emergency situations.
Qualifications & Requirements
Experience:
Two (2) years of heavy public contact experience with multi-tasking responsibilities. Public Safety dispatch experience is desirable.
Education:
Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth (12th) grade.
Licensing:
Completion of the California Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) Basic Public Safety Dispatcher course is highly desirable.
Typing Certificate:
A typing certificate with a speed of 35 net words per minute must be submitted with your application. Accepted certificates:
Must be from a public school, business school, or temporary agency.
Must be dated no earlier than six (6) months prior to the application date.
Must include:
Five (5)-minute timed test
Gross typing speed in words per minute
Gross number of errors
Net words per minute
Probationary Period: Two (2) Years
