Opportunities
Candidates must meet one of the following criteria:
Successfully completed a California POST-approved Basic Police Academy with a valid California POST Certificate.
Currently attending or accepted to a POST-approved Basic Police Academy.
Role & Responsibilities
As a Police Officer at the City of Hayward, you will engage in diverse law enforcement activities, including but not limited to:
Patrol Duties: Monitor assigned areas by foot or vehicle, perform security checks, and respond to incidents.
Traffic Control: Address traffic-related issues, investigate accidents, and ensure safe vehicular operation.
Criminal Investigation: Handle criminal and juvenile investigations, gather evidence, and support court proceedings.
Community Engagement: Provide information, directions, and assistance to the public; foster relationships within the community.
Responding to dispatches and attending to crime scenes
Conducting arrests and issuing citations
Writing reports and serving legal documents
Investigating traffic accidents and hazardous conditions
Operating patrol vehicles and communication equipment
Participating in special details and training
Currently attending or accepted to a POST-approved Basic Police Academy.
Qualifications & Requirements
Experience:
Completion of a California POST-approved Basic Police Academy with a valid certificate within the past 18 months, or current attendance/enrollment in a POST-approved academy.
Education:
High school diploma or equivalent required; Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree preferred.
Licensing:
Valid Class C California Driver’s License.
Special Qualifications:
Must be free of any felony convictions.
Must be a U.S. citizen or eligible permanent resident.
Must be at least 21 years old at the time of appointment.
Must pass a background check and meet medical, physical, and psychological standards.
Vision correctable to at least 20/30.
Bilingual candidates are encouraged to apply.
Essential Skills:
Understanding of law enforcement practices and public relations.
Ability to handle high-stress situations and make quick, sound decisions.
Proficiency in writing reports, following procedures, and using law enforcement equipment.
Probationary Period: Two (2) Years
