Overview
The City of Hayward is accepting applications for Police Officer – Lateral. Police Officers at the City of Hayward perform a wide variety of law enforcement assignments including but not limited to: patrol, traffic control, criminal and juvenile investigation, and radio communication. These require operating a patrol car or motorcycle, arresting and citing violators of laws, writing reports, serving warrants, testifying in court and providing information to the public.
Role & Responsibilities
As a Police Officer at the City of Hayward, you will engage in a variety of law enforcement duties, including but not limited to:
Patrol Operations: Monitor designated areas on foot or by vehicle, perform security checks, and address incidents.
Traffic Enforcement: Investigate traffic accidents, manage traffic flow, and address vehicular issues.
Criminal Investigations: Conduct investigations, gather evidence, prepare cases, and testify in court.
Community Assistance: Provide information, assistance, and services to the public.
Responding to radio and telephone dispatches
Conducting arrests and issuing citations
Writing detailed reports and serving legal documents
Investigating traffic incidents and hazardous conditions
Assisting in crime investigations and crime scene management
Operating patrol vehicles and communication equipment
Participating in special events and crowd control
Performing field training and related duties as assigned
Qualifications & Requirements
Experience:
Minimum of one (1) year experience in a law enforcement agency within the last 36 months.
Possession of a current Basic California P.O.S.T Certificate.
Education:
High school diploma or equivalent required; Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree preferred.
Licensing:
Valid Class C California Driver’s License.
Special Qualifications:
No felony convictions.
U.S. citizenship or eligible permanent resident status.
Minimum age of 21 years at the time of appointment.
Vision correctable to at least 20/30.
Successful completion of a background investigation and meeting medical, physical, and psychological standards.
Bilingual candidates are encouraged to apply.
Essential Skills:
Knowledge of basic law enforcement terminology and concepts.
Public relations skills within law enforcement.
Ability to handle high-stress situations effectively and make quick decisions.
Proficiency in report writing and law enforcement procedures.
Capacity to develop firearm skills and perform physically demanding tasks.
Probationary Period: Two (2) Years
