Position Overview

Public Safety Dispatchers handle emergency and non-emergency calls.

Responsibilities include:

  • Using computer-aided dispatch systems

  • Dispatching police, fire, or other city services

  • Providing assistance and information to callers

  • Coordinating communication between field units and other agencies

Minimum Qualifications

  • Experience: Two (2) years of experience as a public safety dispatcher for a Public Safety Answering Point, including heavy public contact while performing multiple tasks and using a computer-aided dispatch system.

  • Education: Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth (12th) grade.

  • Licenses and Certificates: Completion of the California Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) Basic Public Safety Dispatcher course is highly desirable.

Job-Related Testing (1-Day Process)

Schedule:

  • 8:30 AM: Check-in begins (bring photo ID)

  • 9:00 – 11:00 AM: Physical Agility Exam (WSTB) + 1.5-mile run

  • 11:30 AM – 2:45 PM: PELLETB written exam

OR

Submit valid WSTB and/or NTN scores (dated within 12 months) instead.

Step 5

Eligible List

Qualified candidates will be placed on a ranked list for potential hire.

Step 6

Background Investigation

Includes fingerprinting, credit/criminal check, drug test, polygraph, and psychological/medical exams.
