Overview

The Police Officer Trainee position serves as a gateway to becoming a Police Officer with the City of Hayward. This trainee role is a civilian position during the period before and while attending a POST (Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training) certified police academy. The academy typically lasts around 6 months. After successfully completing the academy and based on position availability, Trainees are sworn in as Police Officers.

Role & Responsibilities

  • Academy Training: Attend a POST certified police academy to learn about the criminal justice system, laws, police procedures, enforcement techniques, first aid, and physical fitness.

  • Departmental Training: Develop an understanding of Police Department functions, Police Officer responsibilities, and field operations.

  • Field Training: Receive practical training to transition into a Police Officer role.

Upon appointment as a Police Officer, duties may include:

  • Patrol, traffic control, and criminal/juvenile investigations.

  • Operating patrol cars or motorcycles.

  • Arresting and citing violators, writing reports, serving warrants, and testifying in court.

  • Providing information to the public.

Qualifications & Requirements

Required Skills and Abilities:

  • Academy Completion: Successfully complete all academy requirements.

  • Observational Skills: Accurately observe and remember names, faces, numbers, incidents, and places.

  • Emergency Response: Think and act quickly in emergencies and accurately judge situations and people.

  • Legal Understanding: Interpret laws and regulations effectively.

  • Report Writing: Prepare clear and concise reports.

  • Self-Defense and Firearms Proficiency: Gain proficiency in self-defense techniques and firearm use.

  • Instruction Compliance: Follow oral and written instructions efficiently.

  • Public Interaction: Deal courteously and effectively with the general public.

Experience:

  • No prior experience required.

Education:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.

Licensing:

  • Valid Class C California Driver’s License.

Special Qualifications:

  • No felony convictions.

  • U.S. citizenship or eligible permanent resident status.

  • Minimum age of 21 years at the time of appointment.

  • Vision correctable to at least 20/30.

  • Successful completion of a background investigation and meeting medical, physical, and psychological standards.

  • Bilingual candidates are encouraged to apply.

Probationary Period: The probationary period continues until successful completion of a POST basic academy and appointment to the position of Police Officer.
